Overview
Puget Sound itself is a body of water lying east of Admiralty Inlet, through which ocean waters reach inland some 50 miles from the Pacific Coast to provide all-weather ports for ocean-going ships at Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia. The waterway is a complex and intricate system of channels, inlets, estuaries, embayments, and islands.Common usage has broadened the Sound's description to include the surrounding lowlands extending east to the Cascade Mountains and the various cities and towns lying therein. Such usage also includes Whidbey, Camino, and Fidalgo islands as well as the Kitsap Peninsula.

Overview
Stretching over 90 miles long and covering over 1,350 square miles in area, Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. It is also one of the most impressive, a 300-foot wall of ice rising sheer and jagged from the ocean. You may hear the rumble and see the monumental splash as the glacier severs into great ice chunks, known as "calves."

Overview
College Fjord, which branches off of Prince William Sound, plunges into the heart of the Chugach Mountains. As the name suggests, the glaciers along the fjord are generally named after East Coast Ivy League colleges. Baltimore Glacier flows from the northwest into Harvard Glacier, at the end of the fjord. Note how the medial at the center of Baltimore Glacier is picked up by Harvard Glacier and carried to the sea.Dominating the terminus of College Fjord is Harvard Glacier, a tidewater glacier noted for its very active calving. While more than 90 percent of all glaciers in Alaska are retreating, Harvard Glacier is slowly advancing. Notice the harbor seals resting on the ice. Glaciers calve with a sharp boom that sounds similar to a massive detonation of high explosives, followed by a roar as thousands of tons of ice plunge into the sea.

Prince William Sound
Overview
Vitus Bering's Russian expedition in 1741 opened Prince William Sound to the Western world. The British, Spanish, and Russians have all contributed to the exploration and naming of numerous bays and islands. Urr, gold, timber, and fish have all fueled economic booms in the Sound which has now become a major port for the shipment of Alaskan oil. The 15,000 square miles of Prince William Sound are full of glacially-carved fjords over 1,000 feet deep (300-400 meters) and mountains that thrust out of the sea to their highest point on Mt. Marcus Baker at 13,250 feet. Waters of the Sound are protected by a series of islandsthath provide a protective barrier to the ocean swells. A 3,500-mile-long coastline is the boundary to the world's most northern temperate rainforest. Three million acres of forest are home to western hemlock, white spruce, and Sitka spruce, some of which grow to over 100 feet tall.Prince William Sound has one of the richest salmon fisheries in the world. Five salmon fish hatcheries add to already bounteous runs of sockeye (red salmon), pink salmon, coho (silver salmon), chinook (king salmon), and chum salmon. Other fisheries include halibut, cod, snapper,r, and shrimp. Shorelines are cluttered with clams and mussels excellent for eating. Deeper waters are home to all porpoises, orcs, as, another's. Spring brings the largest gathering ofshorebirdss in the world to the area. Also, thousands of Canada geese, snow geese, swans, and cranes funnel through the Sound en route to northern breeding grounds. When the fish are running bald eagles share the elbow room with bears and fishermen.

Overview
The city of Kodiak on the eastern coast of Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska is only a 60-minute jet flight from Anchorage. This community is Alaska's sixth largest and is situated on the ssecond-largestisland under the American flag. Over 15,575 residents live on the island of Kodiak, including the outer villages and the U.S. Coast Guard Base. Kodiak Island is perhaps best known for its giant brown bears, the largest land carnivores on earth. They can weigh over 1200 pounds and, when standing erect, can measure over 11 feet tall. It is estimated that nearly 3,000 of these magnificent animals live on the remote reaches of the island. Cool summer ocean breezes and mild winter winds give Kodiak a moderate climate. However, because of its proximity to the ever-changing fluence of the cold Arctic waters and the effects of the warm Japanese current, the weather is often rainy, foggy, and certainly never-changing When the sun shines on Kodiak, and it does quite often, you'll be treated to some of the most spectacular coastal and mountain scenery you'll find anywhere. Summer temperatures range between 40 and 70 degrees. In winter, the temperatures re a bearable 30 degrees avon rage. Most of Kodiak's precipitation is in the form of rain, about 60 inches annually. It's this moist, yet sunny environment which gives Kodiak its lushness of grasses and brilliant varieties of wildflowers. It also provides Kodiak with clear-running streams that attract the multitudes of spawning salmon each season. The Kodiak Island archipelago comprises some 200 islands. The largest island in the chain is Kodiak which is followed by Afognak, Sitkalidak, Raspberry, and Shuyak Islands. A wilderness state park offering cabins and kayaking opportunities has been established on Afognak Island.

Overview
Amid the wild countryside that crowds around it on all sides, Anchorage has grown into a spirited, cosmopolitan city - by far Alaska's largest and most sophisticated. The relative affluence of its largely white-collar population - with a sprinkling of olive drab from nearby military bases - attracts fine restaurants and pricey shops, first-rate entertainment, and world-class sporting events. Flashy modern towers punctuate the skyline, and colorful flowers spill from hundreds of baskets on downtown lampposts. Traffic from the city's busy international airport, served by more than 15 international and domestic airlines, lends a more cosmopolitan air than you might expect from a city with only 258,000 residents - nearly half the people in the state. Yet despite the 14 McDonald's, 2 Wal-Marts, and a 16-plex movie theater, the city has not entirely lost touch with its frontier spirit. Sled dog races are still revered, and moose and bear sightings in downtown Anchorage or on the Coastal Trail that rims the water are not uncommon. First incorporated in 1920, Anchorage is still a young city. Its citizens' median age of 30 and aggressive style make this - and not the capital city of Juneau - the state's power center. In addition to acting as the state's oil development center, Anchorage hustles its living as a government, banking, transportation, and communications hub. Anchorage residents are primarily from elsewhere in America - they include oil workers from such conservative oil-patch states as Oklahoma and Texas - and the attitudes they bring have fueled the conservative, pro-development mentality that characterizes the city and Alaska as a whole. Although representing less than 8% of the population, Alaskan Native peoples add an important cultural dimension. A growing Asian population is also having an impact, with well-stocked Asian food stores and restaurants an increasingly familiar sight. Boom and bust periods followed major events: an influx of military bases during World War II; a massive buildup of Arctic missile-warning stations during the Cold War; reconstruction following the devastating Good Friday earthquake of 1964; and in the late 1960s the biggest bonanza of all - the discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay and the construction of the trans-Alaska pipeline. Not surprisingly, Anchorage positioned itself as the perfect home for the new pipeline administrators and support industries, and it attracts a large share of the state's oil tax dollars. In the last decade, Anchorage has become an increasingly important focus of travelers to Alaska. The central location, relatively mild climate, and excellent transportation system make it a natural place to begin or end a trip.

Port of Call Dutch Harbor

Overview
Dutch Harbor is located in the Aleutian Islands on Unalaska Island. The commercial fishing fleet berthed here is responsible for the pre-eminent catch, in terms of quantity and quality, of the nation's ports. The area's 18th-century Russian past is reflected by two stately Russian Orthodox churches. Dutch Harbor's participation in World War II, beginning with a Japanese air attack on June 2, 1942, is reminiscent of an impressive array of weathered military sites, concrete pillboxes, and bunkers. Eleven military installations consisted of the Dutch Harbor Naval Base and other facilities required for harbor protection and support.

Overview
Nawiliwili is located on the southeastern coast of the island of Kauai between Lihue and Nawiliwili Bay along Highway 51 near Ninini Point and the Huleia Stream. Kaua'i is divided into five major districts, or moku 'aina. Nawiliwili Bay is located in the moku 'aina of Puna on the southeastern coast. One meaning of puna is spring, and Puna has an abundance of springs and streams caused by its location on the windward side of the island. Around 1000 A.D., settlers from the Marquesas arrived, led by Punanuikaia'aina. He succeeded in creating a chiefdom independent of Kona in Puna.

Moreover, Honolulu can probably live up to and even surpass whatever we imagine. World-famous beaches and tropical weather set the scene for an amazing mix of Pacific cultures in this Hawaiian capital. There is a reason why Hawaii is consistently rated as one of the nation's top travel destinations; in fact, there are several of them. Waikiki Beach is the center of activity for Hawaii's biggest industry: tourism. This is one of the world's greatest resort playgrounds, featuring some of the most beautiful beaches and hotels in the world. Visitors from all over the world flock here to enjoy the sun, the sand, and the incredible nightlife. Besides the beaches, visitors to Honolulu can take tours of the countryside surrounding the downtown area. These tours are amazing, bringing visitors to some of the most beautiful rainforests and volcanoes in the world. Animal and plant life are abundant, and the scenery is unsurpassed. A five-minute car ride from Honolulu brings visitors to some of Nature's most beautiful and awe-inspiring sights. Several museums, including the Bishop Museum, combine exhibits on Hawaiian natural history with lessons about the history and culture of its many diverse peoples. The Waikiki Aquarium is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States, and it features many of Hawaii's most interesting sea animals. The Honolulu Zoo also features some of the unique mammals, birds, and reptiles that inhabit the forests just outside of the city. The history of Hawaii is very rich, as the islands have always attracted many different people. Visitors can tour the Iolani Palace, the residence of the last of the Hawaiian monarchs. They can also visit Honolulu's Chinatown, which is more authentic than many of its mainland counterparts. They can also visit the Arizona Memorial, commemorating the destruction of the battleship Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought America into World War II. Honolulu exhibits the best of Hawaii in every way. From its famous beaches to its incredible natural preserves, this town has attracted millions of people from around the world. Many of those visitors stayed, helping to make Hawaii one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse places to visit in the United States. Anyone lucky enough to be going to Hawaii knows that he won't be disappointed.

Overview
Kahului is located in Maui County on the west side of the island of Maui between Wailuku and Lower Paia along Highway 32 near the West Maui Forest Reserve and the Pacific Ocean. Kahului is the heart of Maui and the only deep water port for the island. This is where the major cruise and container ships come in, the main airport, Kahului Airport is located here also. Kahului has great variety in shopping and services, but lacks the variety of fine restaurants that Lahaina has, although some of the local dining favorites reside here. There are few hotels and resorts in Kahului, there is, however, a new golf course. There are four major shopping malls with the largest being the Kaahumanu Mall. Most of 'industrial' Maui is located in Kahului. It is here where one of the main power plants is located, most of Maui's service-oriented businesses, and the greatest variety in shopping. Everything from small local stores, catering to residents, to large discount stores such as K-Mart and Costco. Kahului has grown a lot in the past few years, unfortunately, the infrastructure has not. As a result, traffic is congested most of the working day. The traffic can be especially heavy while exiting the Kahului Airport area. Rush hour traffic is especially bad, both in the afternoons and evenings, traffic from Paia and Upcountry bottleneck at the intersection of Dairy Road and Hana Highway. Allow a little extra time for traveling through this area of Maui.

Overview
The Polynesians arrived in the Hilo area about 1100 A.C. They eventually inhabited the shores of Hilo Bay, farmed their crops, fished, and traded their goods along the Wailuku River. In the late 1700s, the days of King Kamehameha’s rule, Hilo was the center of political activity and social growth. It was the prime place for the King to build his army of ships designed for conquering the Hawaiian Islands. By 1791 native Hawaiians had traveled as far as the United States and China. The King befriended many of the foreigners who traveled to the islands. With such considerable traveling, the Hawaiian way of life soon became influenced by products ranging from iron to livestock to non-native seeds. Hilo became a stopping place for explorers, whaling ships, traders, and those curious about active volcanoes. By the 1900’s, Hilo had grown into a commercial center. The sugar industry was booming, several wharves had been constructed, the breakwater was begun and a new railroad connected Hilo with other parts of the island. Then in 1946 – and again in 1960 – two destructive tsunamis swept Hilo’s Bayfront causing the relocation of Hilo’s government and commercial life. When the town was rebuilt, a large park and roadway were situated between the buildings and the shoreline to absorb future tidal waves. Besides being a rare surviving example of a Hawaiian plantation town, cultural diversity is one of Hilo’s special charms. The local term, “mixed plate”, describes well the impact made by Polynesians, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Koreans, other Pacific Islanders, and Europeans on Hilo’s mixed-race culture of today. All these ethnic groups blend in the faces of the people who give Hilo its charm. Its diverse shopping opportunities, its small scale, and its friendliness make Hilo the perfect town in which to linger just a little longer.

Kilauea Volcano
Overview
Kilauea volcano, on the southernmost Island of Hawaii, is one of the most active on Earth. It predominantly erupts basaltic lava in effusive eruptions, although occasionally it experiences explosive eruptions as well. Kilauea sits on the southeastern side of the Big Island of Hawaii, resting on the flanks of its larger neighbor volcano Manua Loa (see map at right). Kilauea stands just under 4200 feet tall at its highest point. Kilauea has a 165m deep circular caldera at its summit that measures 33x5 km(or 6x6 km, including the outermost ring faults). It is said that Kilauea is the home to Pele, the volcano goddess of ancient Hawaiian legends. The current eruption of Kilauea (known as the Pu`u `O`o Eruption) started in Jan. 1983 and as of January 2000, had produced 1.9 km3of lava, had covered 102 km2, and had added 205 hectares to Kilauea's southern shore. In the process, lava flows unfortunately destroyed 181 houses and resurfaced 13 km of highway with as much as 25 m of lava. It has also destroyed the National Park visitor center and a 700-year-old Hawaiian temple ("Waha'ula heiau"). There are no signs that the current eruption is slowing or will come to an end anytime soon.
