The town of Greenock grew from a fishing village to become the site of the first dock on the River Clyde in 1711. Belfast is Northern Ireland's fun-loving and cosmopolitan capital. Its seat of government is Stormont Castle, a beautiful baronial mansion. The quiet, rural feel of Oban is responsible for the abundance of wildlife within the town boundaries. Here grey seals can be spotted swimming in the harbor or resting along the shore. Visit Edinburgh Castle, majestically poised atop an ancient volcanic rock, and stroll the Royal Mile leading to the regal Palace of Holyroodhouse. Discover world-class art at the Scottish National Gallery and find serenity in the Princes Street Gardens. The seaside resort town of Great Yarmouth, situated in the Norfolk region of England, was originally the site of the Roman fort of Gariannonum. Located at the mouth of the River Yare, it became a wealthy trading center of considerable importance. Approaching the coast, ships are greeted by the ethereal White Cliffs of Dover. This iconic strip of milky-white land serves as England's welcoming beacon, its stark beauty becoming more apparent as you draw closer.

The largest and main settlement in the area is Greenock. Traditionally dependent on heavy industry and manufacturing relating to the shipping trade, Greenock is now one of the largest centers for high technology and modern communications media in Europe. IBM, National Semiconductor, Amazon, and T-Mobile One all have their UK or European bases in Greenock. Continued redevelopment of obsolete industrial land has resulted in a comfortable blend of Leisure and Retail services occupying the waterfront area. The road links provide easy access to Glasgow International Airport (20 mins), Prestwick International Airport (45 mins), the main Caledonian McBrayne Ferry terminal in Gourock, and regular freight and passenger Rail transport to Paisley (30 mins) and Glasgow (40mins).

Oban, the unofficial capital of the West Highlands, is a busy working port, as fishing and pleasure craft rub shoulders in the harbor. Often described as the 'Gateway to the Isles', Oban is the main port for ferries departing to the Inner Hebrides. This thriving community boasts one of the most picturesque settings to be found, with houses clinging to steep hillsides surrounding the calm bay. Dominating the skyline is McCaig's Tower, a coliseum-style monument which celebrated its centenary in 1997. Built by a wealthy banker to help alleviate unemployment in the area, the climb to the Tower is rewarded with outstanding views across Oban Bay to the Isles of Kerrera, Mull, and Lismore.Renowned as a popular holiday resort, Oban has a full range of attractions. Oban Distillery tempts visitors with regular tastings of its fine malt whisky as well as excellent exhibitions and tours. At Caithness Glas, visitors can learn about the skills of glass blowing. Restaurants, cafes, and bars abound, many with live bands and ceilidhs, and, for the energetic, swimming and other sports can be enjoyed at Atlantis Leisure. There is also a sandy beach, north of the town, at Ganavan. Evenings offer entertainment and shows, including the traditional Scottish show at McTavish's Kitchens and avaried programe of films at the Highland Theatre.
Leith is the largest enclosed deepwater port in Scotland and can handle handymax ships up to 50,000 DWT. The port offers a full stevedoring and cargo handling service. It is well equipped with modern cranes and equipment and storage is available in modern, secure, single-span transit sheds or in surfaced open compounds. The port is well served by road and rail links. Access and egress to the main working area of the port is through a security checkpoint providing 24-hour coverage where passes are issued and documentation checked to ensure the large amount of goods moving through this area is properly controlled. A computerized stock-keeping system is in place for all commodities that allow customers fast access to updated stock reports. The port offers excellent rail and road connections and Central Edinburgh is easily accessible.Leith has been a port since at least the 12th century and although conscious of its history, the port today is a modern, vibrant maritime getaway. Significant capital investment has been made in the development of port infrastructure and this has ensured that the highest levels of service can be provided to customers.Located on Scotland's east coast, Leith is well situated for the busy North Sea shipping lanes and offers easy access to Continental Europe. The fact that it is a non-tidal enclosed dock system makes it ideal for more complex cargo handling and specialist work.Leith is increasingly used as a turn round port for the disembarkation and embarkation of cruise passengers and their baggage. The ease of transfer from ship to land is also ideal for replenishing ships. Many warships from various Navies conduct courtesy calls at the port.

Great Yarmouth, often known to locals as Yarmouth is a coastal town in Norfolk, England. It is located at the mouth of the River Yare, 20 miles east of Norwich.
Dover is one of the most-visited towns in England but most of the 13 million people who travel to Dover each year are bound for one of the many ferries, catamarans or hydrofoils that cross the English Channel (more properly called the Dover Straits) to North-West France. A small number of travellers stop in the town and enjoy the 'Dover hospitality' that is on offer. There is information on these pages for people travelling into Dover by road/rail/cycle and for those wanting to take a ferry to France, including Port & Ferry News. Drivers will see very little of Dover itself as they enter on either the A20 from the South or the A2 from the North-West. In both cases, the roads arrive at the Harbour, where they join. The whole of Dover's town stretches inland from the Harbour and continues along three valleys into the Kent countryside. Dover is at one end of the North Downs and has several ranges of hills, two of which have fortresses dating from the medieval and Roman eras, as well as more modern (19th Century) times. Behind the town centre are the modern-day barracks, Dover's past and current commitments to the country have always included more than can be seen under the famous White Cliffs. Modern-day Dover has a mixed economy but is still very heavily dependent on the ferry industry. Other major employers include: the Ministry of Defence (at Connaught Barracks), numerous freight companies, vehicle sellers & repairers! The history of Dover is best covered in the many books and videos on the subject (available, of course, at the town's Museum!).
