Overview
One of Texas's most popular year-round coastal destinations, Galveston is an island in the Gulf of Mexico 50 miles southeast of Houston, connected to the mainland by a causeway and bridge. The island is a marriage of the best of both worlds: it is both a city and a seaside resort. It offers historical and cultural attractions, as well as swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. The restored Victorian Strand district, resort hotels, and beachfront businesses give a commercial feel to the north end of the island, while miles of private and rental residences on the southern end offer solitude and open beach access. Once one of the world's great port cities, Galveston was nearly devastated by a hurricane in 1900. More than 6,000 residents were killed by the storm, and many structures were demolished. The hurricane prompted city officials to raise the island and add a seawall, making Galveston a safe place to visit today. After the 1900 hurricane and the opening of the Houston ship channel, Galveston lost its position as Texas's busiest seaport, and the street known as the Strand -- formerly the site of stores, offices, and warehouses -- faded as a bustling center of commerce. In the 1950s, preservationists launched Galveston's renaissance by restoring stately homes and building up commercial districts with modern facilities. The Strand, now on the National Register of Historic Places, has one of the largest collections of historic buildings in the country. A resort city with a southern flair, Galveston is a petite and blended version of New Orleans and Charleston.
Overview
In the 1970's Norwegian Cruise Lines developed Great Stirrup Cay as the industry's first private island playground. Needless to say, the idea took off. All major Caribbean cruise lines now offer stops at their Bahamian island for an afternoon of hassle-free surf and sand. In fact, from Great Stirrup Cay, you can sometimes see a Royal Caribbean ship anchored off nearby CocoCay, formerly Little Stirrup Cay. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If you were to sit down and design your private island, it would probably look a lot like this one. Except for your fantastic private mansion, Great Stirrup Cay lacks very little in the way of amenities and activities. The beach, of course, is the main attraction, offering swimming, snorkeling (coral reefs surround the island), rafts, paddleboats, catamarans, and kayaks. For the less-wet set, there are volleyball courts and hiking trails. Set out and try to find the island's lighthouse. Appetites are readily appeased at the beach barbeque and the thirsty can head for the beach bar (the only building on the island with walls - save for the bathrooms, of course). Music arrives courtesy of a calypso band so you can limber up with a limbo contest - then limp off to a waiting, palm-shaded hammock.
Overview
San Juan, Puerto Rico's capital and largest city, sits on the island's Atlantic coast. Its widest beach fronts the Isla Verde resort strip, known for its bars, nightclubs, and casinos. Cobblestoned Old San Juan features colorful Spanish colonial buildings and 16th-century landmarks including El Morro and La Fortaleza, massive fortresses with sweeping ocean views, as well as the Paseo de la Princesa bayside promenade.
Overview
Saint John's is the capital of the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda. Located in northwestern Antigua, this is a cove of the Caribbean Sea, and a major exporter of sugar, rum, cotton, handicrafts, fiber-made items, ceramics, and fabrics. The city is also a tourist destination. St. John's skyline, the capital and major city in Antigua and Barbuda is mastered by the baroque magnificence of the St. John's Cathedral's dome and steeple. These steeples are Antigua's first sight for almost half of all foreign travelers who visit the island nation every year since they come by boat. There are several sightseeing places in St. John's. This is one of the Caribbean's oldest trade ports, built in the late 17th Century. Other interesting spots are the Old Court House, built in 1747, the ruins of Fort James, harking back to 1703, The Antigua and Barbuda Museum, Marine and Living Arts Museum, Redcliffe Quay, plus several other castles and fortresses built centuries ago for the defense of this strategic enclave. The completion of different hotels and resorts to attend to all cruise liners and other vessels docking in has made St. John's a top-rated hub of shopping malls and good-cuisine restaurants. This is a city throbbing with life, a place where you can spend the day at any of its beautiful beaches and enjoy a bustling nightlife later on.
Overview
Philipsburg is the capital of St. Maarten, the Dutch side of the Caribbean island St. Maarten. Beachfront bars line the boardwalk along Great Bay. Voorstraat, or Front Street, has duty-free shops and casinos. The St. Maarten Zoo is home to parrots, monkeys, and a playground. St. Maarten Museum displays artifacts from the indigenous Arawak people. The ruins of 17th-century Fort Amsterdam stand on a nearby peninsula.
Overview
St. Thomas combines the natural beauty of the islands with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is one of the most beautiful harbors in the world and the most visited port in the Caribbean. Elegant dining, exciting nightlife, and world-class duty-free shopping are abundant in Charlotte Amalie. The city's reputation as the shopping mecca of the Caribbean draws visitors from all over the region and around the world. A mountainous island, St. Thomas offers stunning vistas in almost every direction. While Charlotte Amalie is full of energy, St. Thomas also provides natural wonders such as the indescribably beautiful Magens Bay and stunning views of the Caribbean from 1,500 feet above sea level. Drake's Seat is particularly famous for its vistas. Sports and activities are abundant in St. Thomas. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy the George and Tom Fazio-designed Mahogany Run course. St. Thomas is also well known for its world-class yachting and sport fishing.
Overview
Puerto Plata is for those seeking an attractively-priced rest vacation with the option of lots of places to visit. Playa Dorada has the largest number of hotel rooms in the North sharing a gold sand beach and the Playa Dorada Golf Course, an 18-hole course. Meet guests from other hotels during evening outings at the casinos and night spots which are open to all guests. Choose Cabarete if you love windsurfing. Cabarete is famous for having excellent conditions for the sport. Many feel the attractiveness of Cabarete is in the people, the mingling of tourists who enjoy the intimacy of the smaller noninclusive hotels. It is also perfect for those who just want the leisure of sitting in the shade or taking the sun on the beach and for parents with little children.
Overview
Miles of powdery white beaches above clear blue water and one of the richest marine environments make Grand Cayman one of the Caribbean’s finest vacation destinations (and a world-class scuba diving destination). As a British Crown Colony, Grand Cayman enjoys all of the benefits of sophisticated government, touting one of the strongest economies in the Caribbean (with over 600 banks) while still allowing visitors to enjoy duty-free shopping in Georgetown for jewelry, art, local crafts, and unique souvenirs like treasure coins from a sunken Spanish galleon circa the “Pirates of the Caribbean” era.
Overview
The beautiful island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico, is a paradise for divers worldwide. The island is surrounded by more than 25 reef formations where divers of all ages and skills can enter into a completely fascinating and different world: endless coral inhabited by immense shoals of colorful fish. The possibilities are interminable for both beginners and experts. East of the Yucatán Peninsula, on top of the age-old structures of the Mayan coral reef, the second largest in the world, stands the Island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico. Its name, derived from the word Cozumel, meaning “island of swallows” in Maya, conjures up memories of its pre-Hispanic origin, the conquest of America, and the pirates and buccaneers that thronged its seas. The Island of Cozumel measures 48 km from north to south but only 16 from east to west. On either side of the island, beaches form a long, white sandy coast. Gentle waves and transparent waters wash the western side of the island, while huge waves crash against the eastern side. Its flora and fauna have several unusual features, including certain endemic species, such as the dwarf raccoon and the Cozumel wren. Cozumel’s greatest wealth, however, lies underwater.
