More About San Antonio

Overview

San Antonio is a popular tourist destination offering an abundance of history, with some of the most frequented sites being the Alamo in the heart of downtown and the four Spanish Missions, which once provided shelter for frontier settlers. The Alamo and the Missions have been named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The city's second most visited attraction is the River Walk, subsequently deeming San Antonio "River City" — the River Walk is a beautifully landscaped walking and bike path that flows through the downtown area beside the San Antonio River. During the Christmas and New Year holidays, an astonishing festival of lights comes to life. Once summer arrives the air is filled with the sounds of Folklorico and Flamenco music, most common during celebrations such as Fiesta Noche del Rio — an outdoor performance featuring the dances of Mexico, Spain, Argentina, California, and Texas.

Savor delightful cuisine throughout town at lively places such as the Historic Market Place where you can taste iconic Tex-Mex dishes and the authentic flavors of old Mexico, or the Tower of the Americas where you can take in spectacular sky-high views while dining at the revolving Chart House Restaurant. Discover more of the world’s history with a visit to the remarkable San Antonio Museum of Art, filled with 5,000 years’ worth of art and culture, or plan a visit to the famous San Antonio Zoo open year-round.

General Safety Tips: By taking a few simple security precautions before and during your vacation, you can help ensure that you, your traveling companions, and your valuables are as safe and secure as possible.
  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.
