Navigating Vancouver



Vancouver B.C. has a lot to offer whether you go for a week or for a weekend. It had been a while since we were able to cross the border so it was a must-do destination for our 30th wedding anniversary. Of course, it is no surprise we chose to book our trip through Costco Travel. After all, we Costco employees get the same great savings as all Costco members.

Fairmont Waterfront

After some research, we decided to stay at the Fairmont Waterfront. - Opens a dialog True to its name, it is right across the street from Canada Place cruise terminal, which lights up beautifully at night. We were in a large room with a king-sized bed and spacious seating area on the 4th floor. We were facing the water, so we got to enjoy a very nice view. The first restaurant we tried was Arc, the restaurant inside the hotel. I had the mushroom rigatoni, and it was really good, reminded me of a refined adult macaroni and cheese as it was creamy, cheesy and mushroomy. My husband had the steak frites, which was a perfectly-cooked angus beef striploin with truffle fries. The magic really happened when we decided to share, as the tender steak worked very well with the mushroom pasta. Paired with a pear cider this was a fantastic first meal in Vancouver.

    Afternoon Tea at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

    Any trip to Vancouver is enhanced by planning at least one afternoon tea. I did a lot of research and there are a lot of wonderful-sounding teas available. I chose Afternoon Tea in Notch8, located at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver - Opens a dialog , mainly because they had a cherry blossom theme, but also because they are walking distance from Fairmont Waterfront. Upon walking into the tea room we were both amazed by the beautiful sakura decor, from the wallpaper to the lovely blossoms on the decorations around us. The Japanese-inspired tea menu was a lot of fun, with sandwiches such as the Konbini Egg Salad Sandwich with salmon roe and my personal favorite, the Sakura Pork Katsu sandwich. There was so much food we wound up taking the sweets back with us, but not before the wonderful people at the team room provided a special anniversary treat. We plan to go back around December for a Christmas-themed afternoon tea. Pro-tip, make a reservation at least two to three weeks in advance. It’s worth it!

        Craft cocktails reign supreme at Odd Society Spirits.

        Odd Society Spirits

        This was the first trip in a long time that we took without the kids. To celebrate, we went to Odd Society Spirits, a small batch craft distillery that came highly recommended by a close work friend. This place is “little but mighty”, with a large menu of craft cocktails. I had the Negroni Sour, which is a gin drink made with rainbow sherbert, and my husband the The Drive with rye, with rye whiskey and bittersweet vermouth. They were both delicious! We decided to share a Cheeseburger hand pie as well, it was served hot and flaky, a great complement to our beverages. The biggest surprise for us was the housemade ginger beer. I admit I expected it to be like most every other ginger beer I’ve ever tried… meaning non-alcoholic. Not this version! It was crisp, spicy and most definitely had a kick. I’m glad we shared that one!

          This is just a very small sampling of all the fun adventures we had in Vancouver. We recommend researching and booking your north-of-the-border adventure soon!
