There’s something undeniably electric about being among the first to experience a brand-new ship - where every detail feels intentional, every space untouched, and every moment curated for discovery. This is what I experienced during an inaugural sailing onboard Norwegian Luna, Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) highly anticipated next-generation vessel, that is redefining contemporary cruising. As a sister ship to Norwegian Aqua, Luna builds on an already elevated blueprint, then takes it further with bold design, immersive attractions, and an unmistakable focus on freedom and flexibility.
The “Firsts” That Set Luna Apart
Innovation is central to Luna’s appeal, and it’s the “firsts” of this ship and its class that turn heads. Leading the charge is NCL’s wildly popular Aqua Slidecoaster - an industry-first hybrid roller coaster and waterslide that blends speed, twists, along with immersive visuals & sounds into one unforgettable ride at sea. The Aqua Slidecoaster is one of my most favorite features about this ship!
Another standout is the Glow Court, a next-generation digital sports complex that transforms from a high-tech game space by day into a vibrant nightlife venue after dark. Then there’s Ocean Boulevard, a wraparound outdoor promenade boasting infinity-edge pools, glass walkways, and comfortable seating.
Dining That Amazes
Dining aboard Norwegian Luna is less about routine and more about exploration. With no fixed dining times and an expansive mix of venues, guests can curate their culinary journey as they go. All-day dining occurs at main dining rooms: Hudson’s and the more intimate Commodore Room - as well as an expansive all-day buffet serving up international cuisine at Surfside Café. From there, the energy shifts at The Local Bar & Grill where delicious Reuben sandwiches, burgers, fish & more dominate the menu. Indulge Food Hall, serves elevated, yet casual, cuisine. Being the most unique dining concept at sea, Indulge Food Hall offers Latin street food, Pan-Asian specialties and more, all of which you can order to your heart’s content (via tablet). Also, while at Indulge Food Hall, be sure to try some of the delicious smokehouse offerings from Q Texas Smokehouse, all prepared in the only meat smoker at sea!
Specialty dining is where Luna leans into particular indulgence. Cagney’s Steakhouse remains a cornerstone: Classic, polished, and consistently excellent, while Hasuki turns dinner into theater with Teppanyaki chefs creating flavorful meals with flair. Sukhothai is a contemporary take on Thai cuisine: Bright, aromatic, and designed around shareable plates, while Los Lobos serves vibrant, yet elevated, Mexican dishes with freshness. Palomar impresses guests with its impressive Mediterranean cuisine, and Onda by Scarpetta is the ship’s modern Italian restaurant reinforcing Luna’s mission to provide sophisticated and unforgettable dining experiences throughout every meal.
A Vibrant Nightlife
Evenings aboard Luna don’t follow a single path - they unfold in layers. You might start in the Observation Lounge, where 180-degree ocean views and a quiet cocktail set the tone, or perhaps the Whiskey Bar which offers an impressive selection of whiskeys in an intimate and polished setting.
But the absolute centerpiece of the evening is the Luna Theater & Club - which is a transformative venue that evolves throughout the night. What begins as a Broadway-caliber theater becomes, by late evening, a full-scale nightclub pulsing with DJs, lasers, and energy that feels more Miami than mid-ocean. However, Luna’s entertainment lineup reinforces that shift:
• ELTON: A Celebration of Elton John delivers a high-production tribute packed with recognizable hits and visual spectacle.
• HIKO: Innovation Meets Wonder pushes boundaries with acrobatics, technology, and a futuristic narrative that feels unlike anything traditionally seen at sea.
• "Syd Norman's Presents: A Tribute to Eagles" adds a nostalgic, crowd-pleasing experience: Something familiar, easy, and universally engaging (noted by early guests as a standout experience).
Accommodations: Contemporary and Inviting
The stateroom design reflects a modern traveler’s priorities: Space, comfort, storage, and flexibility. Even entry-level cabins feel thoughtfully laid out, with large bathrooms and clean, contemporary finishes. Solo travelers benefit from Studio cabins which provide exclusive keycard m access to a private lounge. This is one of the more social, yet understated, features onboard Luna.
Families gravitate toward the Family Balcony staterooms and Family Club Balcony suites (along with connecting accommodations in certain categories), where the added space makes a tangible difference on longer sailings. The Haven: A Ship Within the Ship
If the rest of Luna seems like a sophisticated resort at sea, The Haven is like an elevated private yacht club layered quietly within. This key-carded and exclusive space has a distinct aesthetic, blending elegance with modernity. Here, mornings are quieter. Afternoons stretch longer. The sundeck, with its private infinity pool and hot tubs, are intentionally uncrowded, offering peaceful views and a sense of exclusivity that’s rare on ships of Luna’s size.
Suites within The Haven range from spacious one-bedrooms to expansive multi-room residences, all supported by butler service and concierge attention that quietly anticipates your needs. It’s not just luxury, it’s insulation from the pace of the broader ship.
The Haven Restaurant is arguably the most refined dining space onboard. Reserved exclusively for Haven guests, it feels worlds away from the ship’s buzz, with elevated menus and a sense of privacy that transforms every meal into an occasion.
Space to Breathe: Adults-Only & Quiet Escapes
What surprised me most aboard Luna is how easy it is to find stillness. Vibe Beach Club stands out as the definitive adults-only escape onboard the ship with its an elevated, reservation-only space with plush loungers, attentive service, and a noticeably calmer atmosphere than the main pool deck. Elsewhere, tucked-away spaces like La Terrazza and Ocean Boulevard’s quieter corners create moments that feel almost meditative / especially early in the morning or just before sunset.
Great Stirrup Cay: The Next Chapter
A sailing aboard Luna increasingly revolves around NCL’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay, which is undergoing a major transformation! The most immediate upgrade is a new multi-ship pier (fully operational Fall 2026), eliminating the need for tender boats, making ship to shore access seamless. But the bigger story is what’s being built around it: The new Great Tides Water Park (opening Summer 2026), will include an 800 foot, feature-rich “dynamic” river (with rapids!), 19 waterslides, a 9,000 square foot splash pad and more!
Great Stirrup Cay’s Silver Cove continues to offer a more exclusive experience with private villas, lagoon-style beaches, and elevated service while a new on-island Vibe Beach Club brings that adults-only serenity ashore.
What’s in It for Kids (and Teens)?
Families will find that Norwegian Luna doesn’t just accommodate younger travelers - it’s designed with them in mind, with dedicated spaces that feel purposeful rather than afterthoughts.
For younger guests (ages 3-12), Splash Academy serves as the heart of the kids’ experience. Divided into age-specific groups, it blends structured programming with free play in a bright, energetic environment filled with games, creative activities, and themed experiences that evolve throughout the sailing - more like a camp at sea: Engaging, social, and thoughtfully supervised.
Teens (ages 13-17), gravitate toward Entourage, a space that intentionally avoids the look and feel of a traditional kids’ club. With a lounge-style design, gaming stations, music, and room to simply hang out, it gives older kids the independence they’re looking for while still providing a safe, curated environment.
For parents, balance is key: The kids are engaged, supervised, and having fun - leaving plenty of time for parents to enjoy a cocktail by the infinity pool or a long, uninterrupted dinner.
Where’s Luna Visiting?
For its inaugural season, Norwegian Luna’s 7-day Caribbean itineraries (originating from Miami) blend iconic destinations with immersive experiences. While specific routes may vary, a typical sailing includes:
• Cozumel – Known for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant reefs, and laid-back beach clubs;
• Roatán – A lush, adventure-rich island perfect for snorkeling and zip-lining;
• Costa Maya – Gateway to ancient Mayan ruins and authentic cultural experiences;
• Harvest Caye – Norwegian’s exclusive island escape, complete with cabanas, beaches, and a swim-up bar.
While Norwegian Luna will move its home port from Miami to New York City April 2027 (for New England, Canada and Bermuda sailings), you can be sure that this ship will continue to strike a balance between relaxation and exploration wherever it sails.
