Which Hawaiian Island Suits You?

Simply considering a Hawaiian vacation can conjure up some imaginative and idyllic ideas of tropical vistas, pleasant trade winds and absolute relaxation. But much like a fantastic meal requires an exceptional wine pairing, you should take time to figure out which island is an ideal fit for your vacation needs.

My parents and I first visited O’ahu in 1983 and were based in the Honolulu & Waikiki Beach areas which a travel agent insisted would be the best place for our family. Unfortunately, this was not the case; my parents needed tranquility (and all I needed was a swimming pool) - not an overwhelming touristy experience. In later years, my parents and I quickly branched out to Maui since we wanted to avoid what we experienced during our visit to O’ahu - hence the reason for this guide.
O’ahu
Romance: Waikīkī Beach is ideal for couples who enjoy vibrant and energetic cities, beach life and a nightlife that won’t quit. On the other hand, O’ahu’s North Shore, Waianae Coast, Lanikai Beach, etc. are examples of regions within the island that cater to couples with its scenic beauty and romantic environs.

Family: As Hawai’i’s most populous island, O’ahu has a lot to offer families of all ages! Honolulu and Waikīkī Beach are areas which draw tourists visiting the island for beach fun, nightlife and history. Be sure to visit the Waikīkī Aquarium, Pearl Harbor and Honolulu Zoo while on the island.

Spa: While Waikīkī Beach is filled with luxury spas, you should also consider some of the relaxing luxury spas that are available in Ko’Olina and North Shore.

Nature: Most of the island of O’ahu abounds in nature - so you should take advantage of hikes in the Manoa Falls and Diamond Head areas, while also basking in the sheer natural beauty of O’ahu’s North Shore.
Maui
Romance: Without a doubt, Maui is one of Hawaii’s top romance and honeymoon destinations! With its romantic beaches in Wailea, Makena & Kapalua and couples-centric resorts, you cannot go wrong with Maui!

Family: You and your kids will enjoy whale watching (when in season mid-December to mid-May) as well as a snorkeling excursion at Molokini Crater.

Spas: Some of the best spas in Hawai’i are in Maui, with most of them having their presence in Wailea.

The Big Island of Hawai’i
Romance: Ideal for adventurous couples, the Big Island of Hawaii offers volcano tours as well as stargazing at Mauna Kea.

Spa: While not as plentiful as Maui, the Big Island offers several luxury spas that are worth a visit within popular resorts along the Kohala Coast. Additionally, there are a few nice spas on the northern side of the island in Hilo.
Kaua’i
Romance: Nicknamed “The Garden Island" Kaua'i is, by default, an island that is well-positioned for romantic getaways. In addition to its lush, secluded and Eden-like environs, the island is quiet and boasts breathtaking views.

Na Pali Coast of Kauai.

Family: While extremely laid-back, calm and geared towards those who appreciate sedate vacations, Kaua’i does offer family-friendly beaches (such as Lydgate Beach found on the eastern side of the island near the mouth of the Wailua River).

Spa: Upscale resorts on Kaua’i’s southern coast in Poi’pū as well as its northern shore in Princeville offer immersive and impressive spa experiences that take advantage of the island’s natural surroundings.

Nature: The entire island of Kaua’i is teeming with nature: flora and fauna dominate this one-of-a-kind island! You will be further impressed with its unspoiled beauty when visiting Waimea Canyon, Nā Pali Coast and many rainforests.
As you can tell, Hawai’i has something for everyone. This guide has been curated from my own personal visits to the islands, so I’m hopeful that you will be able to thoughtfully plan an enjoyable and memorable vacation based on my advice.
